This was so cool – I’ve been trying to help co-workers learn Adobe suite.. have a tutorial based – event watching interface
- offered a “DO IT FOR ME”
- “WHAT OTHER WAYS CAN I DO THIS?”
Context based
- Action Trees and Logical Workflows
Apple Guide made use of the AppleEvent Object Model (AEOM), allowing the system to examine the state of the application as it ran, and change the help in response. Help content was created in individual steps, and each step could have assigned to it conditions to determine if the step should be skipped, or if the step was needed. For instance, if the user had already completed several steps of an operation and needed help to complete it, Apple Guide could “see” where they were, and skip forward to the proper section of the documentation. Additionally AEOM allowed Apple Guide to drive the interface, completing tasks for the user if they clicked on the “Do it for me” buttons (or hypertext). |
A distinctive feature of the system was support for Coaching. Using the AEOM, AppleGuide could find UI elements on the screen, and circle them using a “red marker” effect to draw the user’s eye to it. |

Very cool
| The current version allows you to build your own family tree, decorate your profile with personal details, and invite your family members to join in – but there’s much, much more to come. |

What we’re seeing is the birth pains of a third generation of social networking.
The first generation was email/IM buddy lists. These allowed us to connect and keep track of our people across distance and time in a way that was more efficient and more seamless than ever before. We knew who was on our lists and we managed the connections. Visibility was limited but we were hooked.
The second generation is our current crop led by Friendster and now MySpace/LiveJournal/Facebook. These sites allow for users to keep track of one another and add a layer of visibility that was quite dramatic when first ‘discovered’. Users were very excited about sharing pictures and collecting as many friends as possible because all these were visible to those who were watching. It was like the mall and middle school all over again. To be seen was the thing.
The third generation will expose the history of this visibility. The full history of what you’ve done in the network. A record of how you’ve behaved in the past will be available in the future. This will (and should) affect your behavior and your friend lists and your decision about which pictures to post.

i love information. i love my friends. i love information about my friends; however, i don’t like everyone knowing information about what my friends and I do. good networking is like good flirting: leave something to the imagination! |
1) A user looking at their own page sees a reflection of all their friends’ activity within the system for the last couple weeks – a ‘fortnight story’ of their friends’ activities/updates. |

Service Helps Friends Share Their Online Discoveries
|
FriendFeed users can see what their friends are reading, listening to or viewing on the Web as a continuous stream of notifications. This stream can appear on a personal Web page or in a module on the user’s customized page on Facebook or Google. The system does not require the installation of software, but it does require the friends to participate. |
The system can track people’s activities on a variety of Web sites, ranging from collaborative news filtering sites like Digg and Slashdot to music services like Last.fm and video and photo services like YouTube and Flickr. |
FriendFeed now supports 23 Web services, and it also permits users to comment on postings and carry on online discussions. |
“This gives you a snapshot of what people you know think is interesting,” Mr. Taylor said. “It’s kind of a blog that writes itself.” |

A really wide range of accounts and feed types are supported. In about five minutes I had easily added my Blog, del.icio.us, Digg, Flickr, Google Reader Shared Items, Last.fm, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube feeds to my profile. Streaming of Amazon.com Wish Lists, Furl, Google Shared Stuff, iLike, Jaiku, Netflix, Picasa Web Albums, Pownce, Reddit, SmugMug, StumbleUpon, Tumblr, Vimeo, Yelp and Zooomr services is also supported – a pretty exhaustive list. Incidentally I wasn’t able to add in my Amazon Wish List, but I assume this is because I use .co.uk rather than Amazon.com
FriendFeed is a ‘lifestreaming’ service, allowing an aggregated view of an individuals social-web content to be captured within a single web site. The aim is to make it easier for friends to connect and stay in contact over the web, removing the need to check multiple sites for personal updates as all information from that individual is pulled into a single location. |
Lifestreaming is becoming increasingly popular on the web as RSS becomes ubiquitous and usage of web services more varied. Probably the best known lifestreaming service is the Mini-Feed provided internally by Facebook to pull updates from an individuals profile to the Facebook News-Feeds of their friends. This lifestream is currently limited to within Facebook’s walled garden, whilst other services such as Jaiku let you create and share a lifestream more openly. |

Processing + Multi Touch … Nice
LEMUR!!! I broke down and bought one. I probably shouldnt have but hey, I am a sucker for nice things. Especially if they light up. Oh and triple especially if they happen to also be multi-touch user interfaces. |
I am still getting the hang of it. It is highly customizable. Much more so than I thought it would be. But it is certainly not 100% customizable and there are definitely a couple things I would have wanted from it (considering the price), but overall, I am satisfied with the purchase and look forward to putting it to good use. |
It was fairly easy to get it working with Processing. I ended up using the oscP5 library which allows Processing to send and receive OpenSound Control messages, which is one of the two ways the Lemur can communicate (the other being MIDI). |

hectic and only barely relates to the music which is controlling it), but I think I know what I need to do next. |

Personal Connections and email as — FOUNDATION
Inbox 2.0: Yahoo and Google to Turn E-Mail Into a Social Network |
Web-based e-mail systems already contain much of what Facebook calls the social graph — the connections between people. That’s why the social networks offer to import the e-mail address books of new users to jump-start their list of friends. Yahoo and Google realize that they have this information and can use it to build their own services that connect people to their contacts. |
Yahoo Mail will also be extended to display other information about your friends as well. This can be a link to a profile page, and also what Yahoo calls “vitality” –- updated information much like the news feed on Facebook. There could also be simple features that are common on social networks, like displaying a list of friends whose birthdays are coming up.

Secrets to Finding Foreclosure Deals
|
| fter purchasing more than 25 foreclosure properties in the Little Rock, Ark., area, Butler can spot a deal from more than a thousand miles away — literally. |
“I don’t need a spreadsheet or software to spot a deal,” said the San Dimas, Calif., native who buys foreclosures in a town that is nearly 1,600 miles from where he lives and works. “I have a local real estate agent in Little Rock, and local title and loan people that help put together my foreclosure deals.” |
Butler originally lived in the Little Rock area, so he knows the good locations and neighborhoods. He said he looks for properties with 30 to 40 percent equity. Then, he puts together wholesale deals that are 20 to 30 percent below market value in certain areas and zip codes that he is familiar with. |

Foreclosures Research —
Personal Assistants on Call, Just Not in the Next Office
|
A woman in New Jersey who works for a health care company used the new services to investigate trends in pharmaceutical marketing. An entrepreneur in Toronto used them to build his Web site. A Web designer in Louisiana has them search for images he can use. A builder in Tennessee uses them to get statistical reports on vacant lots before he buys them. |
A man in Cambridge, Mass., even started a business, TajTunes, in which he gets the workers to telephone people in the United States with singing telegrams for $5 a call. |
| GetFriday charges $15 an hour, plus $10 a month, though rates are lower for those who have monthly plans. For instance, a 40-hour-a-month plan costs $360. Brickwork charges $15 to $25 an hour. |
| pays $14 an hour to a graduate student in Utah who was making $8 an hour in a campus job. |
